A thin layer of mist hung over the dew-soaked grassy flats at Dingo Dell camping area as the first rays of daylight emerged over the tree line.  Pastel shades of pink flooded the morning sky before slowly turning to vivid hues of red and orange.  The pre-dawn silence around me was suddenly broken by the haunting â€Å'poop-poop-poop” calls from a pheasant coucal, rising from its roosting spot in the undergrowth along the creek.  If you want to experience one of the most rugged and pristine areas in Australia, its hard to go past Kanangra-Boyd National Park.

The best birding spots

Around billabongs and paperbark swamps, on vast savannah plains and towering sandstone escarpments, the wet, tropical Top End is teaming with birdlife.  Twitching travellers headed for the north will discover hundreds of top bird-watching spots where residents and seasonal visitors happily cohabit in all seasons. You don’t need much gear, just a pair of binoculars, a field guide with colour illustrations and this list of top bird spots to explore.

With digital cameras becoming more and more affordable, and technology making those cameras smarter and more user-friendly, capturing the â€Å'best shots” can literally be as simple as point-and-shoot.  The Power family, now in the second month of their four-month-long Great Aussie Road Trip, are recording their adventures (and misadventures) with cameras from Canon’s PowerShot range.  On The Road caught up with the Powers during a quiet moment to find out how the Canon PowerShot cameras are performing a family holiday.
