Swanning down the Murray

A trip along the mighty Murray River is an absolute "must" for anyone travelling around Australia. For those who choose to dwell along its 2600km-or-so length, the Murray is their lifeblood and it's surrounded by a rich history as well as agricultural lands.

The town of Swan Hill is about 1200km from the Murray's source near Mount Kosciuszko and about 1400km from where it empties into the ocean in South Australia.

Tackle the tableland

During our recent travels that saw us wandering through Queensland, our route took us past the turn off to Blackdown Tableland National Park, some 183km west of Rockhampton in Queensland.  Now, we must admit that neither of us had heard much about this quite remote park before our visit, but as we had some time on our hands we thought we'd call in and have a look.  It ended up being a very good decision.

Turning off the Capricorn Highway 11km west of Dingo, a sealed road heads south through fairly flat, open country before abruptly winding its way up the steep escarpment of the Dawson Range.  The road is quite narrow in places and caravans are not recommended.

The bitumen runs out on top of the range and from here on through the park the main trails are gravel, usually in quite good condition except after rain when they become slippery and a little eroded.
