The Limmen National Park in the Northern Territory is so new that, other than a few designated camping sites with basic toilet facilities, the park is pristine and unspoilt.

Let's hope it stays that way.

It is not necessary to venture from the road to appreciate the grandeur of the park.  The scenery is stunning, the rivers magnificent and the many lagoon close to the road are a bird watcher's delight.  As you travel through the park, and drive into and out of the cuttings at the river crossings, spare a thought for the pioneers who had to fell trees and cut the ramps to form a passage for their supply wagons and drays.

It is little wonder that the old time drovers abandoned drays in favour of packhorses, which could negotiate these hazards as nature made them and allowed more freedom of movement.

Accessible from every corner of the country, the Red Centre is one of Australia’s favourite road trip destinations.

For the hardy travellers who set out for Alice Springs along sandy desert tracks or endure endless days on the bitumen, the adventure begins long before you hit town.

But when you do, Alice offers a dozen ways to stretch your legs on scenic short hiking trails and cruisey cycling paths through vast vistas of spinifex plains and rugged red ranges.

For travellers heading south from Alice Springs, the Old Ghan Heritage Track is a more interesting alternative to the Stuart Highway.
Surplus to requirements after the new standard gauge line was opened in 1980, the Old Ghan has been resurrected as a tourist attraction.

The first leg is 570 kilometres of dirt track along the fringes of the Simpson Desert to Oodnadatta.
The route is well endowed with explanatory signs that relate the story of the Ghan, along with snippets of the history of the Overland Telegraph Line.
