The Grand High Tops
The rocky spires and domes
that are visible throughout the Warrumbungle
National Park are the remnants of a large volcanic
centre. Over the years, the rocks have weathered
and much of the softer outer sandstone has crumbled
away, leaving the harder trachyte (thick lava)
outcrops towering over the surrounding slopes.
Known as the Grand High Tops,
these magnificent towers – Belougery Spire,
Crater Bluff, the Breadknife and more – are
virtually the inner workings of an ancient volcano.
These are among the natural features that will be
long remembered by those who visit the magnificent
Warrumbungles, just out of Coonabarabran in the
central north of New South Wales.
